Get your RTS on @SaltLAN34

Postby Madjesty » Tue Nov 04, 2014 12:07 pm

Yo Folks

Can I request some form of RTS competition for the LAN? or have some help organising one?
As RTS fan and not being that ace at FPS games, LANs so far have missed a certain something.

So anyone else interested?

Suggestion for games:
Supreme Commander:FA
Supreme Commander 2
Planetary Annihilation
Dawn of War
Red Alert 2 or 3

That and getting a big 6-8 player game of a slower game like Sins of a Solar Empire or Civ would be really awesome!

RTS games are awesome to play in a competition, but they take forever to complete, that is the only thing that puts people off doing these games in a tourni

Yer I kinda guessed that's why it had not been implemented yet.

But I think with a little planning its not that hard to do.
If there is a lot of interest you can use FFA games of 4-8 (depending on numbers) to cut down the numbers until you only have 4 people left.
Plus groups can play a match at the same time rather than separately.

I wonder if there's anything like Ground Control/World in Conflict, but some combination of modern/free/works on a lan. Both of those supported drop-in/drop-out multiplayer, so you could join/leave in the middle of a match without it screwing up the game.

I really enjoy Sup Com 2 and Red Alert 2, so I'll be up for those.

How can we help you organize these games - would you like an announcement on the projector - we can certainly help with that.

It's all about Age of Empires, imo!

AOE2 is what I'm currently playing a lot of at the moment ;) Egg, gonna have to 1v1 you sometime!

StarCraft is also a great game (but can suck if the internet connection is playing up)

@Egg: I didn't consider AOE/AOE2, certainly worth adding to the list.

@XCon: A message on the projector would be awesome, plus prises if possible.

I did think of StarCraft but in my experience it can get a little too competitive. Also the skill level between even a general RTS veteran and a StarCraft PvP ladder player is just silly and not very balanced. (yes I suck at StarCraft)

I did think about have a broad category RTS showdown, where the players could just agree what game their specific match will be played on, with a house default to avoid arguments.

I'll throw WC3/TFT into the mix. That, along with SC1 is lan friendly.

Wha? Translation anyone?

Well after some thought I would propose:
Round 1: 1v1s play any RTS you choose
Round 2: FFA matches - House Game
Round 3-n: 1v1s - House Game
1v1 matches will be elimination games with the FFA matches being top 1/2 being continuing to the next round?

For the House Game I would suggest one of the Old C&C games that are now Free and totally LAN-able!
Sound good to peeps?
