Places to visit

Postby neon » Mon Oct 01, 2012 9:27 pm

Kyoto
Nagoya
Mt Fuji (On a good day)
Climb Mt Fuji?
More in Tokyo
Yoyogi park again (music arena too)
Yokohama (just south of Tokyo)
Stay on Miyajima? Look for the lovely looking beach you can see from the summit.
Visit the attached part of the main island to the south west
Visit the island to the south west of Osaka
Travel north from Tokyo
Visit the North Coast
Island hop around Hiroshima, pretty tropical feeling
Nikko (as suggested by Laura who we bumped into randomly last year) map link
Skytree - Higher than Tokyo tower
Roppongi

Any other suggestions?

Kiyosumi Garden looks pretty nice, and not that far away either. It's about 4km south of where we stayed in Asakusa.
Tokyo National Museum isn't far from Ueno.
Monja Street is where they make the pancakes. It appears we weren't even close last time :(

Sunshine Observatory - I fancy attempting to take some night-time photos. My last attempts from the top of the hostel on my phone were unsurprisingly shocking. Long exposure anyone? Something along these lines:

It seems there is still plenty to explore in Tokyo.

There are some places to explore around Roppongi which look pretty nice. A couple of high rise department stores (with 200+ shops!) and some nice gardens.

Yokohama looks to be pretty interesting. For those who like Theme parks, how about this for a rollercoaster:

Suica is accepted on the travel down, and it's about 30 minutes away from Tokyo. According to the page linked above, jay walking isn't allowed and we are likely to get whistles blown at us by the local police. I guess we were lucky last time. The impatient westerners that we are.

In other news, it would appear we were massively lucky with our hostel last time. We were paying about 3500 JPY / night. For 8,900 JPY / night you can get this impressive place, look at the size of it!

Loving the spacious feel of the place. In all seriousness, that is pretty standard money for a twin hotel room - so we really had better keep to hostels. Especially given the number of people going.
