I'd love to see something with big teams and more to it than 'shoot the other guys', like savage2 (which is probably easiest to set up and free)

They're not very good police, they're driving on the wrong side of the road.

Savage XR would be better than Savage 2.

I will setup a up to date copy of the game files for if we want to play it

I tried getting bf3 coop to go last lan and it didn't work. something like bf2 or earlier would work on the lan, but I don't know how many participants it would get without a simple "download and unzip" setup, and then getting a decent amount of people playing. I guess it might work if you start on a 16 player map and then make the server bigger if people get interested.

Actually, having just seen the NS2 'gorilla' update video, how about trying some NS1 for more involved team based gaming? Just a HL1 mod.

Science and Industry is another one I'd love to give a spin, but too many games spreads people too thin.

Both are absolutely excellent mods, Freelance. As you say, most people arn't happy with installing mods - they're too lazy. But if there is enough initial demand I'll try and organize a game of either. Happy to destroy some people at NS1. :)

The learning curve is another thing. I'd say you need something that lets newcomers be useful by just doing combat and goes from there, rather than being overwhelmed at the start "help! what am I doing? .... sod this I'm off /quit".

S&I is fairly basic, but with a bit of depth in the research/scientists. It doesn't have to last all lan so it might be alright.

DC was a mod for BF1942 and it was fucking awesome

Project Reality is a brilliant mod for BF2 but it will suck for LAN. It really needs 64 players to work, and those 64 need to know how to play it because the experience is VERY different to the vanilla game.
