Room for my full rig?

Postby true_gamer » Tue Sep 20, 2011 11:34 am

Due to my setup, I'm going to need 6ft+ of table for my triple monitor setup. Is this ok?
If so I will pay for my ticket now.

Cheers,

Simon.

Urm, how about I bring all 3, so I can share/show people some triple monitor gaming and they can see how good and intensive it is.

Have you ever been to a LAN before?

Why on earth would you need three monitors? lol

One will be more then ample. With three all you are going to do is take up way to much space, use too much power and generally annoy the person who might be sat next to you. Plus we have all dabbled in multi monitor gaming, hell any "gaming" for that matter.

A LAN is not a showroom for your rig.

I'd say if you want to get a whole desk, pay for two seats if it's important to you.

I recommend you do not put a weighty set of expensive monitors on the tables. The load will all be towards the back, and they are just standard fold-up tables. For the same reason, we recommend computers go on the floor.

Our tables are relatively generous by lan standards (In terms of width and leg room), and we've not had problems with people sharing desks even with larger monitors. If you need a whole table, then you need to pay for 2 tickets

Nope I have never been to a LAN. Although a LAN is all about, gaming, socializing, checking out everyone's PC, helping trouble shoot things etc...
Why do I need 3 Monitors? Because I like the desktop space it gives me. Makes multitasking very easy, as well as running multiple apps. E.G emails on one screen, web on another, whilst having your playlist, Word or whatever open on the third monitor.
Gaming; Triple monitor gaming has come a long way! I can max out any game bar Crysis 1/Warhead with maximum AA @ 6030x1080 @ 60FPS. (Just cause 2 and BFBC2 can run maxed out at that res with 32xAA).

So now its time for you to get of your high horse, and say...Why not, lets make this LAN more fun, and most of all, a friendly environment!

A LAN is a show room for your RIG! Hence why everyone brings their 'Custom PC' to it.

Also if what your saying is correct, then why did DFI bring out LAN PARTY motherboards, that glow under fluorescent lights? To make peeps at LAN's go..."WOW look at his RIG!"

Case closed!

So you have space for 64 peeps, and yet if you don't fill all these spaces, peeps will just spread out. Is this LAN PARTY for fun, or to make money out of people???

EDIT; My 3 monitors weighs no more than a DELL 3008WFP, and probably uses less Electricity.

careful now, you're disagreeing with the guy who has been helping at/running LANs for a very long time, which includes getting hands dirty in the electrics and electrical load balancing. Wishy knows his onions. I think you'd also be surprised at the power consumption of a TFT backlit by a fluorescent tube, I'd be almost certain one 30" screen consumes less power than 3x 22" (or whatever size). That's in addition to your tri-sli rig.

Also if you're going to insist on taking up a rig that powerful and occupy two seats, it makes sense that you are charged for two seats as
a) It's been a while since the lan so there's a very good chance of a sell out, and you're taking up a seat no one else can use
b) power consumption - it's not free. if you're going to pour a few hundred extra into your rig every few years, what's spending another ~£20 for a seat for 2/3 days

Fun fact, we can't play BFBC2 at the lan anyway because you can't run a LAN game or host a server. You'll probably be playing TF2 or CSS if you want to actually play something with the rest of us lesser mortals.

OK i apologise. But see it from our point,

No one really cares about how good anyone's rig is, it's like saying i have a better house then you. You just don't. A LAN is all about socializing and gaming, that is it. You don't need three monitors, you think you do but all of reasons you have given are nothing more then luxury's. You just don't need any of the those things at a LAN. In summary save your back and space in your car, i and others alike was the same but you soon get into a routine of taking less and less every LAN to which i'm at a point of taking just bare essentials now.

No, a LAN is not a showroom for your rig. Certainly not this one. Yes we will certainly have a chat about it and get advice about the gear inside but it's certainly not a "omg you have a better rig then me can we be best friends?!?". Having been to Dreamhack in Sweden (the biggest LAN party in the world) you could quite clearly see no one cared about showing off there rig, everyone was there for the gaming and that alone. DFI brought these things out to appeal to the 14 year old kiddy COD club. While they may have some decent features all the added eye candy is nothing more then a ploy to increase the price point from any of there other motherboards. For someone who has yet to go to a LAN you can't really argue about this point.

If we have 32 people attending we arrange room for 32 people, this saves work time for the staff and also improves the logistics of the network and cabling.

Come to our LAN i think you will love it, the people are great and so is the gaming. Just don't expect everyone to bow down and salivate over your rig. It just won't happen.

I'd laugh if wishy enforced a 90degree FOV in all the game servers.

Your screens
3 x 65w 23" screens
My "Lan" Screen
1 x 40w 17" screen
Typical screen
1 x 65w 23" screen

Your PSU
1 x 1500w
My desktop
1 x 400w, with 150w of headroom
Typical lan desktop
1 x 500w

Between your desktop and screens you're drawing 7.5 amps. Which basically means if we ran anybody else on the same power run as you, you'd trip the MCB (10 amps on the new distro)

Unless I've done my maths wrong, you'll be using 1700w, IE 1.7KW over 46 hours = 78kwh = around 10 quids worth of electric, and cuts into the profits needed to finish off the château in the south of france the westlan staff have been building with the huge profits from each lan party.

Frankly this is excessive. You don't need this rig, you don't need three screens. You need to turn up with one screen and play some games.

If we have smaller numbers than 64, we won't be putting tables for 64 out, we'll be putting less out. Spreading out makes the event unsociable.

(Hint: We run westlan because we enjoy it. Halls aren't cheap. Electric isn't cheap. We cook free bacon sarnies FFS. If I wanted to make money I'd make far more doing a weekends worth of overtime instead of running a lan party for ungrateful buggers to attend. The westlan staff started the lan buying equipment out of their own pockets. Any profits now are used to buy additional equipment)

My figures were with my 3 monitors combined. Otherwise divided them into 3. 45w peak, 21w avg.

Frankly the numbers aren't important against your requirement for additional space, the power requirements of your PC and the likelihood of you being unhappy when the table doesn't take the weight.
