erm. Cough.

Is 802.11N backwards compatible?

in the same way some 802.11g access points can associate with 802.11b clients, at the expense of performance of the other clients.

802.11n access points do not make 802.11g clients "super duper" it just operates normally, although antenna improvements in most cases improve the range by a 10%-20%

Yes, but as with B vs G you tend to loose most of the speed advantage when you enable backwards compatibility (On my default). Plus I don't like the idea of extra routers being on the network.
Take a poke at http://www.solwise.co.uk/wireless-24.htm for real world figures

A standard AP will cover the area nicely

mm. It's just rather interesting, I have been doing a rather extensive module on wireless networks recently, although it tends to cover things like physics, modulation and compression rather than the nuances of WLAN.
