Making Ethernet Cables

Postby psymon » Mon Aug 31, 2015 9:02 pm

So, long story short, I now have a 30m ethernet cable cut into 3 unknown lengths.
I figured I'd put some jack on the end, but I've not done it before.
I know some of you have, so I'm looking for some recommendations for tools and techniques.
Worst case, I walk into maplins and find the first things that does the job.
Thanks in advance.

You want a Network Crimping Tool ( Something like this )

Then just follow a tutorial like this one: http://www.groundcontrol.com/galileo/ch5-ethernet.htm

Essentially:
Cut the cable to the length required (done).
Take off the insulation (can be done carefully with a knife. Some crimp tools have a cutter built in as well).
You want about an inch of wire to play with.
Separate them out and gently bend them into place.
Once they're all together and in the right order, pop the clip on the end.
Check the colours are in the right order. If they aren't, do it again.
Make sure all of the coloured cables are roughly the same length and all will make contact with both of the prongs of the metal clips.
You might have to cut them down a couple times.
Make sure that the insulation will be inside the clip and under the clamp but still long enough to reach the metal clips.
Crimp that bitch.

Not bad, but wait and see if it falls apart after you've crimped a few jacks. I've had cheap crimp tools before and all of them are fucked now.

The order of the wires is:

white/orange
orange
white/green
blue
white/blue
green
white/brown
brown

Cut about 10mm of the insulation off, separate the pairs, get the wires in the right order and nice and flat and trim them to the same length if necessary, insert into UPSIDE DOWN jack (so the wires are in the above order when viewed through the bottom of the jack). Ensure all wires make it to the end of the jack where the teeth are. Crimp it....then test. If you fuck it up it'll still probably work at 100Mbps thanks to auto sensing, if you get it right you'll see 1Gbps.

Success!! 1Gb first time! woo!!!
The cable I cut still had a factory done RJ45 so I used that as reference for the colours.
I'll probably learn them off heart soon...
Weirdly, that starter kit I got, the crimping tool has everything necessary to cut and strip too, so the extra tool that only cuts and strips is almost a waste.
Never mind, if I find I need to make up many ethernet cables at once in the future, I can employ a minion to to do half the work :D

Does that grant the secondary tool the official Neomancer seal of uselessness?
edit: I've successfully made a pair of 7m, a 4m, a 2m, and a 1m.

Probably my last question on the matter.
Best place to get more RJ45 connectors?
Seems to be amazon, but I hate sending money out of the country AND waiting weeks for something to comes from [insert far east country here].
Sure as hell isn't maplins...

edit: screwfix :D
editedit: fml
screwfix, 10xRJ45, £2.45
bnq, 10xRJ45, £3.72
maplins, 10xRJ45, £3.29
amazon, 100xRJ45, £2.30

Be careful with copying the colours in the other end. Whilst 99% of injection moulded cables I've seen are fine, I have one or two where the wires in both ends were in completely the wrong order.

Also, my crimper has a stripping tool on it too, but it only fits stranded cable (solid is a bit thicker), so I always use a Cyclops to strip the cable.

I normally carry a proper cutter with me too, as I blunted the blade on the crimp tool ages ago (again, the cutter on the crimp tool will not last long if you're cutting loads of solid cable)
