Alternatives to HP Microserver N54L

Postby Jani » Thu Jan 29, 2015 12:51 pm

I'm setting up 3 boxes as routers, I wanted to use the Proliant N54L for them as they are the perfect machines but they have been discontinued and I don't want to pay £300 for a used one on ebay. Therefore I need an alternative which is around the same spec and price (max £200). It doesn't need to be a supercomputer, it will be running just pfsense, and my only other requirements really are that it doesn't use a tremendous amount of power and it's fairly quiet and small. It must have two low profile pci-e slots (for NIC's).

Thankyou please.

How many NICs do you need? I shunt all the traffic through a managed switch and have 802.1Q running, so my firewall only needs one interface.

I have a Gigabyte GA-C1037UN-EU Motherboard Intel Mini ITX board, which has a cut down ivy bridge processor, rather than atom (Which has a lot more grunt). Add a small SSD, a couple of gigs of ram, case and PSU (PicoPSU if you want small) and you'll be well under budget. It's also dual nic, which is handy

I don't have/need a managed switch, I need 3 NIC's in total as there are two internet connections, and obviously the LAN side. I would rather be able to buy something already assembled, than have to build 3 machines. That's why the N54L would have been perfect, it met all of my requirements. But HP have discontinued it, and the replacement is a piece of shit.

What about an Alix board for PFSense, or the more recent VK-T40E

All way too much money. I did look at the VK-T40E but it's far more than I want to pay.

Also on a side note, instead of using pfsense please give Sophos UTM Home Edition a go, its fucking amazing.

How good is the Sophos software? I'm more interested in the Internet bandwidth as i have 2 adsl lines (exchange only  )

I'm currently using a zeroshell openvpn bond to combine the two to a dedi box that bonds at the other end. Then at least I get failover when one line drops.
