Well Origin wants me to wait until the 5th (the "release" date) for games that have technically been out for years... :(

VPN to a region where it's released?

Dunno, still pre-loading games before i USA VPN it. There's no disc with it only an Origin key so you have to have good broadband.

Wait, so whatever way you buy it, all you're getting is a key and no media?

At that point I'd rather image my discs and perhaps archive my installs and the registry keys.

Ah that would be why - I unlocked it at work, so not a EU IP

It's not "unlocked", I played some Generals on my US VPN for a bit i went back to normal and it locked itself again on Origin restart.

It's going to be the way soon. Blame Steam.

Well, when EA only release their games on origin, it's the only way to play EA games.

Having said that, EA would love to have their games on steam for the sheer amount of people who use steam (and some new releases are) and steam would love to have them as EA are still kind of a big deal and sell lots of games (of which they take a slice for everything sold through steam) and Valve don't really care if your game uses another client once it's sold through steam. The thing keeping some games off steam is if those steam-sold copes then go and sell DLC through a store that isn't steam, which would allow developers and publishers to exploit steam by selling their game dirt cheap (or free) and then raking in the money without paying valve for the service and providing the eyeballs on the games.

The thing is though, steam was the pathfinder for digital download, there were others, but steam was the big one. Now everyone wants a piece of that pie without paying the middle-man (valve). EA aren't the only ones.

I was talking in more general terms. Ubisoft now has a client/store as well now so it's not just EA (but everyone see's past that of course ).

But really, why would you spend £xxx on discs when most people now buy and download PC games.

Uplay right now seems like EADM was (what origin was before it was renamed) a few years back, it's run by digital river, or at least the store end is. You just download the setup files like EADM used to as well

But really, why would you spend £xxx on discs when most people now buy and download PC games.

It depends really, origin lists the C&C collection as a maximum of 41GB for all the games, 15GB minimum. If I'm buying online then fair enough, give me a download, but if you take price out of the equation if I'm buying a retail box I wouldn't mind a nice set of pressed discs so I'm not raping my internet and something to install from. I'm currently uncapped with a reasonable ~17Mbit connection(O2) but I try not to take the piss and that kind of heads into that territory, and that's before you think about the poor unfortunates capped and on bad speeds.

It's one of the things keeping me away from buying Rage digitally, with 22GB to download and store (for an average-ish game, but that's another issue).
