Building a Local Steam Cache, handy for LANs?

Helloooo,

Just read this article: https://arstechnica.co.uk/gaming/2017/0 ... che-server

Premise is that you can use a steam local cache server to download all your games, then instead of downloading them again from Steam, you download them locally from the cache server meaning the internet doesn't get an absolute throttling for it. First place I thought this may be handy is here, but I dunno if this is something you already have... could be a pretty good idea, doesn't look too complicated either, it's just the storage requirements ;_; but yeah whaddaya think?

I believe we have had Steamcache ever since Valve switched to using HTTP for the content distribution :D

Indeed, I built the second iteration of the lancache server. It works by intercepting all DNS requests for steam content servers and passing them to our server. We then have a nginx proxy that just gobbles up http content as it passes through.

The system was originally invented my multiplay, they posted their lancache configurations on GitHub.

We run it with a 100Gb cache and over the last few LANs it has saved us terrabytes of bandwidth.

There are also configurations for uplay, origin and battle.Net, but i didn't bother configuring these because people don't seem to run then much at our LANs.
