Re: Overdue Budget Upgrade

In fairness, the dollar is quite strong - but the dollar price has certainly gone up.

The raw materials are negligible. It's development and fabrication costs

Re: Overdue Budget Upgrade

I've just finished my Ivy Bridge to Skylake upgrade (The wife wanted a desktop, and was happy with a hand-me-down, hence the earlier than normally justifiable upgrade - even if the Ivy Bridge setup was over 3 years old). Processor performance isn't radically different, maybe a 15-20% IPC increase, a...

Re: New PC

CPU - This is Haswell, with a new chip out in weeks I would wait. The M.2 SSD support will be much better. A Samsung x951 512gb will be similar money, and will fly in comparison. PSU sizing. PSU calculator comes up with 350w for this combination. If you SLI'ed it would come to 460w. You're buying a ...

Re: New PC

Yes, so Skylake on 5th august (Confirmed my many many sources. X170 boards are already being produced, and benchmarks are out), and Kaby in a years time a second tock because 10mm is well behind expected timelines, and intel don't want to wait 2 years for another release.

Skylake has been delayed for 6months now. If you can wait that long then sure..

Not seen anything relating to this. Do you have a source?

Re: New PC

Hi Sam, Skylake will be out on August 5th according to a number of different sources. You'd be silly to build a system based on anything else. 8 or 16gb of ram is fine at the moment. 32 is overkill unless you've got some very specific workloads (Heavy video/photo editing, lots of virtual machines) S...

Re: Must have

Forecast is for 18-20c over the weekend. Much lower than here in surrey. It's the coastal location.

In the hall, we have large extractor fans in the room, so I'm anticipating it being on the warm end of comfortable

Re: 8TB HDD for under £190?

Read times are pretty good, it's a dense platter. Think 150mbyte/ sec. Write speeds are more complex. There is a non shingled "Write Cache" area, much like the Samsung 840 Evo SSD had an SLC cache. This write cache has lower density, but as it's not shingled the write performance is "...

Re: 8TB HDD for under £190?

Be careful with these, great in the right use case, but they're very, very slow to write. Like several days to fill slow

Because of the write speeds, they're really unsuitable for RAID arrays, the rebuild times are extending towards a week

Re: Let's Encrypt!

Getting an SSL certificate has been cheap for quite a number of years. We're on a shared hosting package. We could complete the verification steps manually and get a certificate - but SSL has an overhead, especially on the server end (RSA is an expensive algorithm, CPU wise). Our host will configure...

Re: Steam Summer Sale

when ive worked in retail stores, they will refund the differance usallay if you bought it within x days of the price going down. there must be some sort of consumer law in the uk that entitles us to that i would have thought Nope, no consumer law covering that for retail. For internet, you could d...

Re: On saturday nights...

It's very weather dependant, and we tend to find that high summer is a poor time for lan party attendance.

We tend to let people bring their own meat. Disposables aren't great for large groups as they don't stay hot for that long

Re: Overdue Budget Upgrade

Yes, AMD announced next years processors today. Interestingly they've completely abandoned their bulldozer 2 integer 1 float unit approach, and moved to something more conventional. Looks like it'll be a new socket for the next generation, which makes sense when DDR4 should be firmly rooted by this ...
